Tech Help

Site Looks Funny- Good -You must be using Internet Explorer. Stop Now.
  1. Internet Explorer has been called 'the least secure software on the planet", "a hacker's dream"
  2. Microsoft put an NSA Backdoor key into all versions of windows
  3. A 2006 'upgrade' allows M$ to 'phone home' everyday with details of what you're up to.
Microsoft acknowledged reports Wednesday that its latest update to Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA), an anti-piracy program implemented to detect counterfeit copies of Windows XP, phones home to the Redmond company on a daily basis.
Working for Peace Candidates using IE is making it too easy for them.

Besides, there are webpage standards for all browsers, but microsoft refuses to adopt them- it creates a nightmare for web designers trying to make their site work for standards compliant browsers, and for microsoft too. Be nice to webmasters everywhere and kick the evil ms empire in the A$$, Just Say No to Internet Explorer-  get firefox now.

In fact, I hereby start (if it hasn't been already) a campaign to abandon IE. Imagine if top sites like World of Warcraft abandoned IE forcing gamers to switch to an open-source standards browser. We could seriously dent the evil M$ empire. Do Good - get rid of M$.

WYSIWYG Editor -If you don't like this javascript editor, contact the site admin to disable it.

Login faster  by bookmarking the login page

Pictures: You can post images from other sites, or upload them with blog/forum/news posts or in comments- after uploading you'll see the url "http:www.peacecandidates.com/files/the_pic.jpg" - copy this then use the imageimagebutton - paste the url, then be sure to click 'insert image'

Input Format- If you enter an article, etc and it turns out looking horrible, it's probably just a little checkbox. Try changing the input format- experiment a little and you see how it works. Use this image button to toggle off the WYSIWYG editor if you prefer, but then you'll probably want to choose the 'filtered' input format. It's more confusing to explain than to do it, just experiment with the few options and you'll see the difference.

Pasting Text from another site usually works good with the editor, but if it doesn't look right, then after pasting, type ctrl-A to select all, then click image in the editor to sweep the html clean.

Easy Links - To make a quick link to any candidate, state or stooge, just use double square brackets like this [Nancy Pelosi] (but 2 brackets on each end)- this will make an automatic link.

Custom Url - If you make a blog post, the url will be automatically created from the title, but sometimes it's messy. If you'd like to fix it, then immediately after posting (before it gets indexed by search engines), click the edit tab on your post, scroll down to 'URL path settings', click for the drop-down, uncheck the Automatic alias box, then you can fix the url, ie...

Attn Potential Peace Candidates:

1. You(r daughter) Can Run Your Website

2. GET LINUX!

Find a trusted techie friend to join your team- have them install Linux on their computer, thus gaining access to the various programs you might need for your campaign- ie graphics, website production, flyers, audio, etc.. (video editing is still lacking in Linux )- ;

Your techie does not need to be a professional, more importantly a trusted friend- anyone that is pretty good with computers can do it, even if they've never heard of linux. Perhaps your teenage daughter- she'd be perfect to install linux and discover the tools available for your campaign. use google if you get stuck, but for the most part it's pretty easy- you can ask on the messageboard here as well.

Personally I prefer Kubuntu linux, which uses KDE. You don't even need a fast connection to download it, they'll mail you a free live cd. Alternatively, you can buy multiple Linux cds on Ebay for ~ $10. With these, you can boot straight from the cd- not needing to install anything- once you pick your flavor, you can install it to the hard drive.

How to install a dual boot WinXP/Linux for newbies
  1. Buy a 2nd hard drive, 2Gb min, but you can get 40-80Gb for ~ $50, so just do that.
  2. Unplug computer
  3. Open box, touch bare metal case to ground yourself and discharge any static electricity
  4. This step is not necessary, but if you're worried you might make a bad choice during the install process and erase your data, you can unplug both cables from your original Windows hard drive.*
  5. Install new drive: Check jumper settings on new drive, might need to make it 'slave' or 'cable select', also depends on whether you followed step 4.
  6. Turn the computer on, insert the Linux CD of your choice, then install it to the new hard drive- write down the password(s).
  7. Upon Restart you should see a choice of Windows or Linux- now you have a dual-boot machine, where your techie friend has access to Gimp, Scribus, and many other open source applications. This can be an invaluable tool for your campaign.

* If you unplug the windows drive, the install program won't see windows and won't setup the dual boot correctly, but at least you didn't accidentally erase your data : -)  To fix this:
  • plug in the Windows drive
  • boot to linux, from the Live cd if nec
  • edit the bootup settings file- in (k)ubuntu, from the start (K) menu, choose run command, type in this: sudo kwrite /boot/grub/menu.lst  (that's an l not a 1)
  • look thru the file and you'll see a default windows boot settings, uncomment these lines (delete the '#'s), then save the file.
If you get stuck, having a 2nd computer connected to the internet will always help- use 'the google' wink
